Parasite Outbreak at Welsh Petting Farm Leaves 28 Visitors Ill

A suspected outbreak of cryptosporidium, a gastrointestinal infection caused by a microscopic parasite, has affected at least 28 people following visits to a petting farm in South Wales.

The cases have been linked to animal petting and bottle-feeding sessions at Cowbridge Farm Shop, located at Marlborough Grange Farm near Cowbridge. Visitors, including children and families, reported falling ill after handling lambs and calves during farm activities.

Cryptosporidium infection typically causes symptoms such as watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, mild fever, and loss of appetite. Symptoms usually develop between two to ten days after exposure and can last up to two weeks. Young children and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of more severe illness.

In light of the outbreak, the farm has voluntarily suspended all animal interaction activities. Public Health Wales, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, and Vale of Glamorgan Council are currently investigating the incident. The farm is cooperating fully with these enquiries.
