Guest Suffers Over 200 Bed Bug Bites at Oatlands Chaser Hotel
Legal Action Taken Following Severe Bed Bug Infestation
A Dorset man, Mr Paul Parsons, has begun a bed bug bite claim against Mitchells & Butlers Retail Ltd after enduring a serious infestation during an overnight stay at The Oatlands Chaser hotel in Weybridge on 29 July 2025.
Mr Parsons woke to find bed bugs in his bedding and blood spots on the mattress. He captured photographs of the insects before alerting hotel staff.
Despite raising concerns immediately and later in writing, he was left with more than 200 painful bites across his arms, back, legs, and feet.
The bites caused swelling, redness, itching, and extreme discomfort. He later sought medical advice through NHS 111 and purchased steroid cream to relieve the symptoms.
Pest Control Confirmed Bed Bug Infestation
After Mr Parsons submitted a written complaint, the hotel confirmed via email that a pest control company had verified the presence of bed bugs in his room.
Speaking on behalf of Mr Parsons, Oliver Linton of Holiday Claims Bureau commented: “No guest should ever have to make a bed bug claim against a hotel. Accommodation providers have a duty of care to ensure their premises are safe, clean, and hygienic. Our client suffered an entirely avoidable ordeal, and we will be seeking compensation for the pain, suffering, and distress caused.”
Mr Parsons’ Experience
Recalling his stay, Mr Parsons said: “I booked for one night and left covered in hundreds of bites. It was incredibly painful and distressing. Learning afterwards that pest control confirmed the infestation makes it even harder to accept. Guests should never be exposed to this sort of risk.”
Why the Hotel Could Be Liable
The legal action alleges that Mitchells & Butlers Retail Ltd were negligent because they:
- Failed to ensure the room was safe under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1957.
- Breached the Consumer Rights Act 2015 by not providing accommodation to a reasonable standard.
- Failed to inspect, clean, and maintain the hotel properly.
- Exposed Mr Parsons to a foreseeable risk of injury by allowing him to stay in an infested bed.
These breaches form the basis of Mr Parsons’ bed bug bite compensation claim.
