Holidaymakers Launch Claims Over Louis St Elias Resort Cryptosporidium Outbreak

A serious outbreak of Cryptosporidium at the Louis St Elias Resort & Waterpark in Cyprus has reportedly left many British holidaymakers ill during their summer stays, with an increasing number now pursuing legal action with our support to seek justice and compensation.

If you or a loved one has fallen ill whilst on holiday at Louis St Elias Resort & Waterpark in Cyprus, we urge you to get in touch, as you may be eligible for compensation.

What Is Cryptosporidium, And How Does It Spread?

Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite which, if ingested, causes an illness known as cryptosporidiosis.

Symptoms and Risks

  • The primary symptom is watery diarrhoea, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever, dehydration, and sometimes weight loss.
  • In healthy individuals, recovery typically occurs within three weeks without treatment, though symptoms can be severe and protracted.
  • Those with weakened immune systems (e.g. the elderly, young children, or immunocompromised persons) are at greater risk of complications.

Causes of Transmission

Cryptosporidium spreads when oocysts (the infective form of the parasite) are ingested. These oocysts are remarkably hardy and can survive in water and environmental settings for a long time. Common routes include:

  • Drinking or using contaminated drinking water (if untreated or improperly treated)
  • Swimming in contaminated pools, lakes, or water features
  • Contact with contaminated surfaces (toilet facilities, handrails, door handles, etc.)
  • Poor hygiene by hotel staff, food-preparation contacts, or guests
  • Cross-contamination from animals or sewage sources

Resorts and hotels owe a duty of care to their guests. If they fail to treat or monitor their water systems, maintain hygiene standards, or respond promptly to symptoms among guests, they can be held legally liable.

Real People. Real Outcomes.

At Holiday Claims Bureau, we are already handling multiple cases where clients have successfully claimed compensation after showing that the operator or hotel breached duty of care. In one instance, a client was awarded £10,000 compensation following a confirmed Cryptosporidium infection after staying in Turkey. Read the full story here.

We have also published success stories where claimants showed photographic evidence of inadequate pool hygiene, contemporaneous medical records, and resort complaint reports, which strengthened their cases.

Response from Legal Expert, Oliver Linton

Oliver Linton, legal representative at Holiday Claims Bureau, comments “We are seeing a worrying number of serious cryptosporidium outbreaks in holiday destinations, and many people are unaware that they may have rights to compensation.

If you have been unfortunate enough to have fallen ill during your stay at the Louis St Elias Resort & Waterpark in Cyprus, I would strongly advice you get in touch with us to find out how we can help you claim the compensation you deserve; for the pain and suffering you have endured, any medical costs or expenses you have had to pay for out of your own pocket for, and any other reasonable expenses. We are ready to fight for those affected and hold negligent resorts to account.”

How to Support a Claim for Compensation

To build a strong case, the following kinds of evidence will be essential:

  1. Medical records
    • Diagnosis, test results (e.g. stool sample confirming Cryptosporidium)
    • Records of treatment, prescriptions, hospital visits
  2. Receipts and costs
    • Any medical or pharmaceutical costs incurred
    • Travel or accommodation expenses (e.g. extended stay, alternative arrangements)
    • Other out-of-pocket losses (meals, transport, etc.)
  3. Complaints or in-resort reports
    • Did you notify the hotel, resort rep, or tour operator during your stay?
    • Written complaints, emails, or logs
    • Names of staff or witnesses you spoke to in resort
  4. Photographic and environmental evidence
    • Photos of swimming pools (cloudy, dirty filters, algae)
    • Evidence of poorly maintained water systems, broken filtration or signage
    • Any visible hygiene failings in food or water service areas
  5. Witness testimony
    • Other holidaymakers who fell ill during the same stay
    • Hotel staff, tour reps, or local contacts who witnessed unclean conditions

Why Act Now?

  • Acting early strengthens your position and increases your chance of a successful outcome
  • Evidence (photos, witness memory) can degrade over time
