Shigella Outbreak at RIU Cabo Verde Prompts Fresh Holiday Illness Claims

At Holiday Claims Bureau we are once again representing a growing number of British holidaymakers who have fallen ill following their stay at the RIU Cabo Verde hotel. We can confirm that one guest was diagnosed with Shigella after visiting the resort in September 2025, and several others have since contacted us reporting similar symptoms linked to poor food and hygiene standards.

A Disturbing Pattern of Poor Food and Hygiene Standards

Concerns about hygiene and food safety at the five-star RIU Cabo Verde resort are not new. In both 2023 and 2024, we issued warnings to British tourists about unsanitary conditions at the hotel and have since pursued successful holiday illness claims for those affected.

“Our clients are describing strikingly similar experiences, undercooked food, lukewarm buffet dishes, and poor hygiene around dining and pool areas,” said Oliver Linton, our legal representative “We’re now seeing a worrying recurrence of the same issues that were first brought to light over the past two years. The fact that guests are still becoming ill suggests that sufficient improvements have not been made.”

Reports of Severe Illness and Tragic Outcomes

The situation has once again drawn national attention following reports of serious illness and even deaths linked to the hotel. The MailOnline recently covered the heartbreaking case of a 64-year-old British mother who died after falling ill at the resort. Read the full story here.

We also previously reported on earlier outbreaks and claims at the same resort. See our coverage on Sickness Strikes Again at RIU Cabo Verde”.

Helping Holidaymakers Claim Compensation in Cape Verde

We’ve successfully helped a number of holidaymakers secure compensation after falling ill at resorts across Cape Verde, including RIU hotels.

These genuine success stories show how we’ve worked closely with affected guests to achieve justice and fair compensation. “We’re proud to have helped hundreds of people who were let down by poor hygiene on their holidays,” said Oliver Linton.  “When a dream getaway turns into a nightmare through no fault of your own, you deserve both answers and accountability.”

What to Do If You Fell Ill at RIU Cabo Verde

If you recently returned from RIU Cabo Verde and experienced symptoms such as stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, or fever, we urge you to seek medical attention and contact us as soon as possible.

“If you’ve suffered illness on your package holiday, you may be entitled to make a holiday illness claim against your tour operator,” added Oliver Linton. “We’re already gathering evidence from affected guests, including medical reports and witness statements, to support group action against the operator responsible.”
