Cyclospora latest – Couple say parasite struck at Royalton Riviera Cancun

A couple staying at the 5-star Royalton Riviera Cancun claim to have been caught up in the latest Cyclospora outbreak to hit hotels in the Cancun and Riviera Maya regions of Mexico.

Outbreaks of the parasite, which is thought to be spread via fruit and vegetables contaminated with infected faeces, have plagued Mexican resorts every year since 2015.    R Kate from Cwmbran, posting on TripAdvisor, says she and her partner enjoyed their 14-day stay until illness struck towards the end:

“…Myself and my partner are both currently poorly with Cyclospora which has been officially issued as a public health warning in England and Wales during our stay. It was mentioned by TUI upon arrival but not prior which is important for people with weak immune systems.

“Another downfall is the lack of toilet hygiene around the hotel such as the toilets on the ground floor, pool and restaurant toilets. It’s not what you would expect in a 5* resort.”

The hotel boasts a 4.5 average visitor score on TripAdvisor, and most recent visits have been well-received.  However, there are some recent visitors who claim they have experienced poor food hygiene or sickness.  Mauricio, visiting in August, alleges that the food is “neither clean nor good” and left him needing urgent medical attention:

“I had to spend my holidays at the HOSPITAL due to various bacteria I got from the hotel’s food. SALMONELLA was one.  You get this within 24 hours of exposure. During my 6 days at the HOSPITAL, the hotel never cared to call asking for about my health. Of course, I was charged for all the nights I didn’t sleep there.”When my son went to reception asking them to take responsibility for their food hygiene and my situation, the answer he got from the receptionist was: “do what you can, the Hotel is not responsible.”

The hotel are yet to respond on the review site.
