Holiday Illness Settlement: Tourist Awarded Over £3,000 for Cape Verde Sickness

Jake (31) booked an all-inclusive holiday with TUI to stay at RIU Cabo Verde in December 2021.
During the holiday, he started to suffer from stomach cramps, diarrhoea and nausea. The illness ruined Jake’s enjoyment of his holiday.
On his return home, he was still suffering and booked an appointment with his GP. Jake provided a stool sample and upon receiving his results, he was informed that he had contracted the pathogen Shigella. By this point, he had lost 11kg in weight from when he went on his holiday. Fortunately, Jake was able to make a full recovery within six weeks.

What was wrong at the hotel?
Jake only ate in the all-inclusive hotel restaurants. He found that the buffet food was often left uncovered for long periods of time and flies would land on the uncovered food.
During our investigations, we were able to establish that there were large numbers of other holidaymakers who had also suffered food poisoning at this hotel.
It has been confirmed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control that there is a continuous outbreak of Shigellosis coming from Cape Verde. Shigella is an infectious illness typically caught through contaminated food and water. It causes severe diarrhoea which can contain blood, as well as stomach pains and vomiting.
