UK Bed Bug Crisis – What UK Holidaymakers Need to Know
Bed bug infestations are becoming an increasing problem across the UK, with reports suggesting that some bed bug populations are developing resistance to commonly used insecticides.
For hotel guests and holidaymakers, this could mean infestations that are more difficult to eradicate and a greater risk of being bitten during a stay.
At Holiday Claims Bureau, we are seeing the impact first-hand, representing hundreds of people affected by bed bugs in hotels, holiday parks and caravan sites across the UK. If you have been bitten by bed bugs during a hotel or holiday stay, you may be entitled to compensation. Call us today on 0161 813 2131 or contact us online to find out if you have a claim.
Bed bug infestations are on the rise
Recent figures reported by Metro reveal the scale of the problem.
One London borough recorded 155 bed bug infestations in the first six months of 2026, a 40% increase compared with the same period in 2025. June alone saw 52 reported infestations, reportedly the area’s highest monthly figure since before the pandemic.
Pest control companies are also reporting increased demand, with one specialist reporting a 30% increase in calls following unsuccessful initial chemical treatments.
The growing problem is being linked, in part, to insecticide resistance. Bed bugs can develop resistance to chemicals used to control them, meaning conventional treatments may not always be effective.
What does this mean for holidaymakers in the UK?
Bed bugs can hide in mattresses, headboards, bed frames, furniture and other areas around sleeping accommodation.
Common signs include:
- Red, itchy bites, often appearing in clusters or lines
- Blood spots on bedding
- Visible bed bugs or shed skins
- Unexplained itching after sleeping in a hotel or holiday property
At Holiday Claims Bureau, we have represented people affected by infestations in accommodation including Travelodge, Premier Inn, Haven Holidays and Parkdean Resorts, as well as numerous other hotels and holiday parks.
Michael Walker: ‘We are seeing the consequences first-hand’
Michael Walker represents hundreds of UK citizens affected by bed bugs across multiple UK hoteliers and caravan sites, including Travelodge, Premier Inn, Haven Holidays and Parkdean Resorts.
He said:“We are seeing first-hand how seriously bed bug infestations can affect people. Clients have suffered extensive bites, skin reactions, anxiety and considerable distress, alongside financial losses caused by cleaning, replacement belongings and alternative accommodation.
“With evidence that some bed bugs are becoming resistant to commonly used insecticides, it is more important than ever that accommodation providers take complaints seriously and ensure infestations are properly dealt with.”
Can You Claim Compensation for Bed Bug Bites?
Potentially, yes.
The value of a claim depends on the circumstances, including the severity of the bites, how long symptoms lasted, any scarring or psychological impact and financial losses incurred.
Our current claims information indicates that compensation can range from around £1,500 to £3,950 for mild to moderate injuries, with more serious cases potentially attracting £2,300 to £7,800 or more.
Every claim is different, and previous compensation awards do not guarantee a particular outcome.

- £3,500 for Jessica Pople following a bed bug incident at a Holiday Lodge in Brean

These cases demonstrate why we recommend obtaining legal advice before simply accepting a hotel refund or assuming that nothing can be done.
How can you support a bed bug claim?
If you discover bed bugs during a stay, gather as much evidence as possible.
Take photographs
Photograph your bites, the room, bedding and any bed bugs or other evidence of an infestation.
Report the problem
Tell the hotel or holiday provider immediately and keep copies of complaints, emails and messages.
Keep medical records
If you require treatment for your bites or develop a significant reaction, keep evidence of your medical appointments and treatment.
Keep receipts
Retain receipts for expenses such as alternative accommodation, cleaning, medication, pest control and replacement belongings.
Keep your booking documents
Your booking confirmation and correspondence can help establish where and when the infestation occurred.
Don’t just accept a refund
A hotel or holiday provider may offer you a refund after a bed bug complaint.
However, a refund does not necessarily compensate you for the physical injuries, distress and financial losses you may have suffered.
If you have been bitten, it is worth understanding your options before accepting a settlement.
No Win, No Fee Bed Bug Claims
We act on a No Win, No Fee basis for eligible bed bug claims, subject to the terms of the individual agreement.
We can assess your circumstances, explain your options and advise you about the evidence needed to support your claim.
