End of Hilton La Romana trip became an “ongoing, painful nightmare”
As more and more disturbing reports emerge from resorts in the Dominican Republic, the luxury Hilton Romana in Playa Bayahibe has been the subject of allegations of food poisoning.
The beach-side hotel has an official 5-star rating and is one of the premises in First Choice’s ‘Premier Range’.
E.Coli, Campylobacter claim
TripAdvisor contributor ‘langybet111’ says that on the last day of her April stay, she became very unwell and continues to suffer unpleasant symptoms:
“On the morning of our departure, I woke with and upset stomach and feeling very odd. My husband though maybe yogurt would help but when I stood to leave the restaurant, I could not walk 5 steps without whiting out and nearly fainting. I could not focus on my husband and everything was a blur. I was pouring sweat and felt extremely nauseous.
“I laid on the lobby couch while he packed and thankfully I made it into the taxi and to the airport. Once home, I was tested and confirmed having E. Coli and Campylobacter. The medicine to treat this then led me to have C.Diff. After having spent over $1000 on tests, doctors visits and meds and nearly 2 months of feeling rotten, I am still dealing with it. “
Utensils “used over and over”
She also claims to have witnessed ‘unsanitary situations’ in the dining areas at the hotel:
“The placemats and tables were never wiped down or switched out. The same placemat where people sat their dirty utensils were used over and over and new utensils were placed there for the next customer, where the dirty ones were. We were given dirty, used water glasses that still had remnants of wine and lip marks from someone else.
We are lifetime Diamond members and have traveled all over the Caribbean and to many Hilton Resorts and never seen conditions quite like this Hilton in the DR. I am very disappointed that what should have been a wonderfully memorable trip turned into an ongoing, painful nightmare.”
In recent days, submissions have been made to the public food safety awareness site iwaspoisoned.com. One user says they ended up in hospital after returning home:
“I went to Dominic Republic. On the day I was leaving I started getting diarrhea and some nausea. On the flight back I got even worse.
My low back was hurting, chills, flushed, nausea, my body and skin hurt. Aches all over, I got to the resort June 14 and left June 20th . Symptoms s started around 0600 on the 20th. I have severe colitis, sepsis and 3 different infections in bowel. I went to er and I got admitted to hospital”
