Holiday Lodge Bed Bug Claim Victims Receives £3,500 compensation
Holiday Horror Turns Into a Fight for Justice
In July 2024, beauty salon owner Jessica Pople set out for what was meant to be a relaxing four-night getaway with her family at a John Fowler Holidays lodge in Brean. Instead, she faced an ordeal that left her physically scarred, emotionally shaken, and seeking legal help.
“It was supposed to be a family break, but by the second day, I was covered in bites and in severe discomfort,” Jessica shared. “I couldn’t believe it when I found the bed bug infestation behind the headboard after being told the room was fine.”
Over 50 Bites and Weeks of Recovery
Jessica awoke on the second morning of her stay with itchy, inflamed marks initially on her wrists. By the following day, her condition had deteriorated, with painful bites covering her arms, legs, torso, chest, back, and even her face. Medical reports confirm she suffered more than 50 bites, requiring antibiotics, antihistamines, and steroid medication to manage the infection and allergic reactions.
According to Dr. Sumeet Vohra, the independent medical expert in the case, “Miss Pople was significantly affected both physically and psychologically. She suffered distress and anxiety, which is not uncommon after an exposure of this nature.”
Holding Holiday Providers Accountable
Jessica turned to Holiday Claims Bureau, where case handler, Oliver Linton of Holiday Claims Bureau, took on her bed bug bite claim against the holiday provider. The legal claim highlighted negligence under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1957 and the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
“The evidence was overwhelming,” said Oliver Linton. “We had photographic proof of bed bugs, medical records, and even verbal admission from the lodge manager. Our client was let down, and we were determined to see justice served.”
The lodge admitted to the presence of bed bugs after Jessica presented evidence herself—yet failed to provide written acknowledgement or proper aftercare.
Emotional and Financial Toll
Beyond the physical discomfort, Jessica reported being bed-bound for a week, unable to work or care for her daughter. “It impacted every part of my life—from work to sleep. I still panic when I stay in hotels, afraid I’ll go through it all over again,” she said.
Her claim successfully accounted for:
- Medical treatment and prescriptions
- Loss of earnings from her salon
- Psychological trauma
- Permanent skin discolouration on her right wrist and forearm
Justice Achieved
Jessica’s claim was settled in her favour, reinforcing the importance of pursuing justice in cases of avoidable suffering. “I’m just glad I had a team that believed in my story and made it easy for me to get the outcome I deserved,” she reflected.
