Over 30 guests fall ill at Buckatree Hall wedding

Public Health England has launched an investigation after gastric illness swept through most of a wedding party at Buckatree Hall in Telford.

It is believed that around 30 of the 56 people attending the ceremony, including the bride and groom, were later stricken by symptoms of stomach cramps and sickness.

Now Public Health England (PHE) are working alongside the local council to establish the cause of the outbreak among wedding guests on August 7.

Guest says ten sick attendees were taken to hospital

A member of the wedding party told the Shropshire Star:

“We went to a wedding at Buckatree Hotel on Wednesday as a family of four. Then myself, my husband and our son started being ill on Friday morning.

“Most of the 56 people at the wedding have been poorly. Of those 10 were taken to hospital. Of those who went to hospital one person was admitted due to underlying health conditions.

“The bride and groom and four of their five children were also poorly”

Health officials begin investigation

Environmental Health officers have already visited Buckatree Hall to check on their food storage, preparation and handling procedures and have been in contact with guests to determine what they ate prior to becoming ill.  Some of those affected have provided samples and test results are awaited.

PHE confirmed that there had been no reports of sickness among other parties using the facility on the same day, or since the outbreak occurred.

Dr Nick Coetzee, health protection team consultant at, PHE said:

“Further investigations are ongoing to identify the bug responsible for illness. At the moment it is too early to say whether the illness was caused by norovirus or from food poisoning.”
